Oncology and Reproduction Unit

Institut Marquès has a specialised unit for reproductive counselling for oncology patients with the aim of assisting women who have had cancer and wish to have a child.

Some 89 % of the oncology patients evaluated by Institut Marquès can initiate a reproductive process. Furthermore, 82 % of them have achieved pregnancy through various treatments, with 7 out of 10 becoming mothers within less than two years from their initial consultation.

The need to preserve the fertility of oncology patients is increasing, as the incidence of cancer in women of reproductive age has risen in recent years due to delayed motherhood.

How is the process carried out?

When a patient comes to Institut Marquès because she wants to get pregnant after cancer, we gather her general, gynaecological, reproductive and oncological history, as well as all documentation related to her cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The Oncology and Reproduction Unit helps patients from around the world and allows them to have consultations without the need for travel, through video calls and email.

A multidisciplinary team evaluates each case and issues a resolution on the type of reproductive treatment to be followed, in consultation with the Assisted Reproduction Service of Institut Marquès. This multidisciplinary assessment helps these patients to become mothers without increasing the risk of disease recurrence.

Yes, you can be a mother after cancer.

The possibility of becoming a mother is not considered in most women who have had cancer and undergone oncological treatment to overcome it. However, this option is a reality according to data from studies conducted with more than 100 patients. At Institut Marquès, we have a specialised unit for reproductive counselling for oncology patients, whose goal is to guide women who have survived cancer about their possibilities of becoming mothers after overcoming the disease.
