Embryo adoption
(or embryo donation)
What is Embryo Adoption?
Embryo Adoption (or embryo donation) is an Assisted Reproduction technique that consists of transferring to a woman the embryos that were left without an assigned destination after an IVF cycle. They carry, therefore, the genetic load of other people.
These embryos come from healthy couples under 35 years of age, who, after treatment, no longer want to have more children.
Furthermore, a large percentage are embryos from egg or sperm donation cycles and, therefore, with great implantation potential. The Embryo Adoption program gives them a new chance at life.

It is a very simple and painless procedure. The preparation of the uterus to receive the embryos is carried out using patches that are applied to the skin and vaginal tablets. In a few days, the uterus is ready and the embryos can be thawed and transferred. This process does not require hospitalization of the patient, who will only have to avoid physical exertion in the following hours.
The pregnancy test that will determine whether the treatment has been a success is carried out 14 days later and, if it is positive, the gestation process is, from the third month onwards, the same as that of any pregnancy, so the patient will be able to Carry out all checks with your regular gynecologist. During the first two months, the patient must maintain the initial treatment.
- During the first visit, the woman’s good health is checked to be able to carry the pregnancy, a gynecological examination is carried out (this can be provided by her gynecologist) and the embryos are assigned.
- An ultrasound and a painless test of the catheter with which the embryos will be transferred through the cervix are performed.
- The treatment to be followed is indicated and the date of thawing and embryo transfer is chosen together.
To minimize the risk of two siblings accidentally meeting in the future (i.e. two embryos generated in the same in vitro fertilization cycle), the system designed for the allocation requires the embryos to change Autonomous Community or Country.
The variety is very wide, as demonstrated by the fact that the last 500 cycles correspond to women from more than 30 different countries.
From a medical point of view the procedure is the same. The difference between the two concepts is only legal. In the case of donation, the embryos come from couples who have given them expressly and in writing to other couples, while in the adoption process the embryos were not donated for this purpose, but rather, by not dictating a destination for them, they are legally protected by the Institute Marques.
In both cases, the only procedure to be performed is the signing of the informed consent for this Assisted Reproduction technique.
