Micromanipulation

What are Micromanipulation Techniques?

Micromanipulation Techniques in Assisted Reproduction are complementary to In Vitro Fertilisation and recommended in special cases to improve outcomes. Some of the more notable techniques are Assisted Hatching, Embryo “Makeup” and Embryo Biopsy.

Contents

Assisted Hatching

Assisted Hatching consists of making a small hole using a laser in the zona pellucida (the layer that surrounds the embryo). This facilitates the hatching of the embryo for genetic analysis (PGT) or before it is transferred to the maternal uterus.

Embryo “Makeup”

Embryo “Makeup” is one of the new Assisted Reproduction techniques that allows the removal of cellular fragments that prevent the embryo’s development.

Human embryos have pieces of membrane-surrounded cytoplasm among their cells. These are generated during the embryonic division process and hinder their subsequent development. Embryo “Makeup” involves making a hole in the zona pellucida and, through it, aspirating as many of these fragments as possible.

Embryo Biopsy

Embryo Biopsy allows a genetic study to be carried out of the embryo (Preimplantation Genetic Testing). It involves extracting one of its cells for analysis. Embryo Biopsy allows a genetic study to be carried out of the embryo (Preimplantation Genetic Testing). It is a highly precise technique that does not alter the embryo’s development.

The biopsy sample is processed and undergoes a genetic study using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS).
