Time-Lapse Incubator: EmbryoScope

What is the EmbryoScope?

Time-lapse incubators, like the EmbryoScope, allow embryo division to be monitored live without having to remove them. They include an internal camera that captures images of embryonic development. This way, biologists can track the evolution of the embryos in real time, without exposing them to temperature changes and oxidative stress, which would occur if they had to be observed under a microscope outside the incubator.

This new technology ensures the optimal physiological conditions for embryo development and provides us with a film of the beginning of life. Our patients can also watch from home on the Embryomobile app.

When is it recommended to use the Embryoscope?

Use of the EmbryoScope is indicated for any In Vitro Fertilization  treatment as it allows for better embryo selection by observing their evolution day by day. Furthermore, during their development, they are not exposed to external factors. Time-lapse incubators increase pregnancy rates.

It is particularly recommended for couples who have undergone several unsuccessful attempts at In Vitro Fertilisation because monitoring allows higher-quality embryos to be selected for transfer.

How useful are time-lapse incubators?

  • Research. The EmbryoScope provides us with very valuable material on how the embryo behaves in the first cellular divisions and it is changing the morphological criteria on which we currently base our evaluation of embryos. All of this helps us understand several questions that have remained unanswered until now.
  • Clinical applications. This new technology increases pregnancy rates thanks to two aspects. First, there is no need to remove the embryos from the incubator to study them under the microscope each day. This avoids changes in temperature, light and physiological conditions. It also allows for a better selection of embryos with the highest implantation potential. In this way, only the best embryos are transferred. From the time-lapse images, embryologists can observe the rate of embryo cell division, how their cells are structured and how they change over time, aspects that until today, indicated a poorer prognosis.
  • Visual experience. It allows us to see real images of what we have had to imagine for a long time. Additionally, it offers our patients the opportunity to view and save these images as a keepsake for their child.

Watch your embryos from home

Institut Marquès patients who undergo In Vitro Fertilisation using the EmbryoScope have the opportunity to watch this “life movie” from their own homes.

Through a system developed by our centre and for the first time in the world, our patients can watch on the internet how their embryos evolve before they are transferred: they can “enter” our laboratory and contemplate their embryos as the embryologists do. More information
